The Kareri Lake is fresh water high altitude Lake North West of Dharamshala town of Himachal Pradesh, India. Kareri Lake at the altitude of 9625 Ft is best known for being a trekking destination in the Dhauladhars. The lake remains frozen from early December to March–April. There is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and Shakti on a hilltop overlooking the lake.
Kareri Lake (also known as Kumarwah Lake) is a high altitude, shallow, fresh water lake south of the Dhauladhar range approximately 9 km North West of Dharamshala in Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh. Its surface is 2934 meters above the sea level. Snow melting from the Dhauladhar range serves as the source of the lake and a stream, Nyund is the outflow. Since the source is fresh melting snow and the lake is shallow, water visibility is very high and in most places, the lake bed can be seen. Kareri Lake trek is more stunning than you can imagine in spite of its proximity with the town that has been seeing traffic jams in summer! A moderately difficult trek, it goes through Kareri Village and traverses through pine forest. The forest gets denser for a while and you might even be able to spot a Blue Magpie or more. The pristine lake is less crowded and it is short weekend trek in the region of Dharamshala. Kareri lake offer a base camp for trekkers heading towards Minkiani pass north of the lake. The main inflow of water into the lake is from the Minkiani peak.
